No support from the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna

Signs of 22 getting upset..!

A conflict of opinion in the government regarding the 22nd Constitution Amendment Bill that has been submitted to the Parliament has emerged and the members of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna have come to a position of not supporting it.

A meeting of the group of members of the government party headed by President Ranil Wickramasinghe, has been held at the President's Office on Monday (03) night where several MPs of the Podujana Peramuna protested the 22nd amendment to the Constitution.

Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna's General Secretary Sagara Kariyawasam, Members of Parliament SB Dissanayake, Dr. Sarath Weerasekera and Sisira Jayakodi have expressed their opposition over the 22nd Constitutional Amendment.

Those members who have said that the 22nd constitutional amendment draft is presented without even discussing it within the party, have questioned on whose interests this constitutional amendment has been presented.

The General Secretary of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna, Member of Parliament, Sagara Kariyawasam, who has commented there, has questioned whether the MPs who supported the 19th and 20th constitutional amendments can wear a cloth and vote for the 22nd amendment.

Sagara Kariyawasam also said in the meeting that twenty members of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna called him on the phone and said that they would vote against the 22nd amendment. Parliamentarian, S.B. Dissanayake, who had commented there, has said that the executive power of the President should not be given up.

He has also pointed out that former President Ranasinghe Premadasa faced the terror of 88-89, Mahinda Rajapaksha ended the war and saved the Parliament in the clashes a few weeks ago because the President had the executive power.

In the meantime, Parliamentarian, Dr. Sarath Weerasekera has emphasized that it is a problem to reduce the powers of the President while the powers of the Governors and the Provincial Councils remain the same.

Speaking at the meeting, President Ranil Wickramasinghe has instructed Dr. Wijayadasa Rajapaksha to educate MPs about this matter. Dr. Wijayadasa Rajapaksa, who has commented accordingly, has mentioned that although he presented this constitution, the constitutional amendment was prepared not according to his own interests but according to the opinion of former President Gotabaya Rajapaksha.
